Pilates found fame and fortune in the 1980s, when these rigorous exercises that aim to strengthen and improve flexibility became a media buzz. It was hardly new, though, having had its beginnings in World War 1, when German gymnast and bodybuilder Joseph Pilates developed controlled movements revolving around the core, working the muscles of the abdomen, lower back, and hips. This is sometimes referred to as the "powerhouse." Today, Pilates is a mainstay for elite athletes. A big draw is that the exercises can be modified from beginner to advanced and adapted for physical limitations, making it valuable in physical rehab. A few tools can assist in getting the most out of the exercises, such as the ball to sit on and balance. It can also be squeezed, as can the Pilates “magic circle” plastic or metal ring. If stretching is your goal, look for flat or tubed rubber bands, which are also used to add resistance when you are ready to up your game.
