If you're using high-intensity discharge (HID) lighting for your hydroponic garden, the most important piece of equipment in your setup is your ballast. That is what regulates the voltage so your bulbs run efficiently despite any fluctuations in electricity that may occur. A digital ballast contains a microprocessor that allows the unit to be smaller, lighter, quieter, and more efficient than a magnetic ballast. The downside is that they are also more expensive. The best digital ballasts are dimmable and protect the bulb through ignition voltage control and line quality. Additionally, a digital ballast will run at lower temperatures, be flexible enough to run a variety of bulbs, and be shielded so the radio frequencies that they emit do not interfere with any nearby electronics.
