It used to be that sulfates were in nearly every shampoo – at least those that were both affordable and effective. Now, more and more formulas are sulfate-free, promising not to strip away moisture or irritate the scalp. These shampoos are gentle in many ways – from not damaging hair even if you wash it frequently to not irritating your eyes should some shampoo suds run down into them. Some do not like that sulfate-free shampoos tend not to lather as well as other shampoos, but lack of suds has nothing to do with effectiveness. You can find sulfate-free shampoos at just about any price or size.
