Avalanche beacons can transmit and receive radio signals from each other. This means they can pinpoint a beacon and person buried in snow. All beacons within a group transmit normal tracking signals during normal hiking. But should an emergency situation arise in an avalanche, the beacons can change modes. The beacons of those who are not buried in the avalanche go to search mode. This allows these searching beacons to pinpoint the location of the buried beacon and person. Newer avalanche beacons use multiple antennas to provide a more precise location. These beacons clip securely to the hiker’s gear. Avalanche beacons carry a long battery life, ensuring they’re ready to operate in a life-and-death situation.
