  • AeroPress coffee makers are extremely easy to use and produce quality coffee in one to two minutes.

Parts of an AeroPress coffee maker

Chamber

The chamber is the main body of the AeroPress coffee maker, in which you mix the coffee and water.

Plunger

The plunger fits into the top of the chamber, and you press it down to extract the coffee into your mug.

Filter cap

The filter cap attaches to the bottom of the chamber and holds the filter. The filter cap keeps the coffee and water inside the chamber.

Funnel

You can use the funnel to pour ground coffee into the chamber without making a mess.

Scoop

Essentially a tablespoon, the scoop measures out the correct amount of coffee to pour into your AeroPress coffee maker.

Stirrer

You use the stirrer to stir together the coffee and water to extract the flavor from the beans and get a quality brew.

How to use an AeroPress coffee maker

Assemble your AeroPress coffee maker. Put a filter in the filter cap, and attach the filter cap to the bottom of the chamber. Sit the AeroPress on top of an appropriately sized mug to hold the coffee once it’s brewed.

Grind your coffee beans. We recommend a medium-fine grind, but you may want to experiment. (Skip this step if you’re using pre-ground coffee.)

Measure out the correct amount of coffee, and add it to the chamber. You can use the funnel to add the coffee if you’re concerned about making a mess. The amount of coffee you should use varies depending on how strong you want your coffee and how much you’re making – consult the coffee maker’s manual for more information.

Heat your water. The optimum temperature is approximately 175°F, so let your water sit for about two minutes after boiling.

Add the water. Pour the hot water into the chamber over the ground coffee. A slow pour helps to make sure you hit all of the coffee grinds for optimum flavor.

Stir it up. Use the stirrer to mix together the coffee and water.

Let it brew. Let your coffee and water sit for a short amount of time to brew. The recommended brew time is approximately 30 seconds, but some people prefer a slightly longer brew.

Press it. After the brewing time is up, insert the rubber end of the plunger into the chamber. Slowly press the plunger down with even pressure to push the coffee through the filter and into your mug. Stop when you hear a hissing sound.

Drink up. That’s all there is to brewing coffee in an AeroPress coffee maker, so enjoy your cup of joe.

Features of AeroPress coffee makers

Ease of use

Most people find AeroPress coffee makers extremely easy to use. Consisting of a few simple parts and no need for electricity, the AeroPress appeals to those who want to get back to basics. While there may be a small learning curve when you get started, this coffee maker is exceptionally user-friendly.

Brew quality

Amateurs and experts alike agree that AeroPress coffee makers brew excellent coffee. What’s more, you can get a high-quality brew with little expertise, whereas some professional coffee machines will only give you a quality cup of coffee after extensive practice. It’s also easy to adjust the strength of your coffee by adding different amounts of coffee and water. And with its extremely fast brew time, coffee made in an AeroPress is never bitter.

Materials

AeroPress coffee makers are constructed from sturdy plastic, with a rubber seal on the plunger. They are completely free from BPA, BPS, and other BPA analogues. The great thing about the plastic construction of an AeroPress is that it’s lightweight and highly durable. This sturdy coffee maker can certainly take a few bumps with no harm done, which makes it ideal for travel.

Tote bag

You can buy a tote bag for your AeroPress coffee maker as an optional extra. This handy nylon bag fits the AeroPress and all included accessories. While not everyone will want a carrying bag, it’s highly useful if you intend to take your AeroPress with you to work, while traveling, or on camping trips.

Price

A standard AeroPress coffee maker, complete with chamber, plunger, filter cap, funnel, scoop, stirrer, and 350 micro-filters costs around $30. You can also buy kits with added extras, such as a tote bag or additional filters, for up to $35.

Tips

  • Consider using a reusable metal filter with your AeroPress coffee maker. If you don’t compost, metal filters are more eco-friendly than paper filters. Some people prefer the flavor of their AeroPress coffee when made with a metal filter, but others favor a paper filter. Experiment with both to find your preference.

  • If you’re using a paper filter, many experts suggest pouring some hot water through the filter before adding coffee to get rid of any paper taste.

  • Experiment with different AeroPress recipes. You’ll find a wide range of recipes online, featuring different water-to-coffee ratios, grind sizes, steep times, and more. Try a few out to find what you love.

  • If you’re serious about making the perfect cup of coffee, invest in a kitchen scale. Weighing out your beans and water with a scale is more precise and will give more consistent results.

Feel free to experiment with different ratios of coffee to water to get different brew strengths. However, for a standard coffee, use one to two scoops of coffee, and fill the AeroPress coffee maker to the number four position on the chamber.

FAQ

Q. Will I need a coffee grinder to use my new AeroPress coffee maker?
A.
You can use pre-ground coffee to make coffee in your AeroPress coffee maker. However, for the richest taste, we recommend using a coffee grinder to grind up whole beans. A burr grinder gives the best results.

Q. How do I make espresso in my AeroPress coffee maker?
A.
While coffee purists might argue that you can’t make true espresso in an AeroPress coffee maker, you can certainly come close. To make espresso in your AeroPress, brew your coffee in the usual way, but use roughly 0.6 ounces of ground coffee to two ounces of 190°F water.

Q. How should I clean my AeroPress coffee maker?
A.
AeroPress coffee makers are extremely easy to clean. First remove the filter cap, then simply press down on the plunger to push the coffee grounds and paper filter straight into the trash or your compost bin. (If you’re using a metal filter, be sure to remove it before emptying the chamber.) Then remove the plunger from the chamber, and give all the parts a good rinse with hot water.
