Buying guide for character bedding sets for girls

Do you know a little girl with a growing collection of merchandise imprinted with her favorite movie or TV character? Now she can have bedding that matches as well.

There are several factors to consider when purchasing bedding for a child, from how much the design appeals to the child to how well it holds up through the wash. Additionally, you have to make sure you get all the pieces you need. At minimum, most people want a fitted sheet, flat sheet, pillowcase, and bedspread or comforter. But there is no “standard” for the contents of bedding sets, and not all sets have the same pieces.

If you’re shopping for character bedding for a young girl, we invite you to take a look at five of our favorite girls’ bedding sets. If you’d like to learn a bit more about bedding sets before making your selection, please read on.

Some children’s comforters have a character on one side and a regular pattern on the other, allowing the child to choose different designs on different days.

What to consider when shopping for girls’ bedding

Which character?

A top consideration is, of course, which characters are featured on the bedding. Making your choice can be slightly tricky, as some “popular” characters don’t maintain their popularity for long. Disney characters are usually a good bet, but the “it” Disney characters also fluctuate based on what’s at the movie theater or on TV.

Opting for a character that withstands the test of time, such as Minnie Mouse or Wonder Woman, might be the way to go. If your child has her heart set on character bedding from the latest Pixar film, however, you may be hard-pressed to change her mind.

Comfort

No parent wants a nightly fight at bedtime. If your child’s bed is cozy and inviting, you just might have an easier time when eight o’clock rolls around. Sheets that are soft and cuddly are preferable to sheets that are scratchy. The same goes for quilts and comforters. You also want to avoid bedding with a reputation for “pilling” after a few washings, as the tiny pills can feel uncomfortable next to your child’s skin.

Size

The bedding covered in our product list above generally comes in two sizes: twin and full. However, there are also toddler bedding sets and character crib sheets on the market. Make sure you choose the right size for your child’s bed.

Durability

You’ll be washing your child’s sheets repeatedly, so you’ll want to make sure they hold up over time. We’re not just talking about comfort; a quality bedding set will maintain its shape and imagery through many washings. A bedding set of poor quality is likely to fall apart at the seams in short order.

Types of children’s bedding sets

As mentioned above, not all children’s bedding sets contain the same pieces. Be sure to read the package or product description carefully to be sure it has the pieces you want.

Bed-in-a-bag

A bed-in-a-bag is exactly what it says – a complete bedding set in a bag. With a twin- or full-size bed-in-a-bag, you’ll generally find one or two pillowcases, sheets, and a comforter. Sometimes you’ll have a dust ruffle as well.

Incomplete set

These don’t include all the pieces, so be sure to watch for that. You may only be getting a comforter and a pillow sham. Or, you may be getting a comforter, pillowcase, and fitted sheet but no top sheet.

Sheet set or comforter only

These items will need to be matched with other bedding items by you – and that factors into the total price you end up paying.

If your child tends to shove clothing or toys under the bed, you may wish to invest in a dust ruffle, otherwise known as a bed skirt. Even if your bedding set doesn’t include one, you can usually find a good dust ruffle for $20 or less.

FAQ

Q. What is toddler bedding?

A. Toddler bedding is the same size as crib bedding. The bedding from a baby’s crib will fit a toddler bed as well, easing the transition from crib to bed.

Q. How many bedding sets does one child need?

A. At minimum, you should have two bedding sets on hand for your child. That way, there should always be one clean set ready for use. Since sheets and pillowcases become soiled more often, you may wish to invest in a third set of sheets in case of emergencies.
