Price and where to buy

The Samsung QN900D, which ranges in size from 65 to 85 inches, is priced starting at $4,999.99 and is available at Best Buy.

Why we like it

Brightness

During testing, we were impressed by the brightness of the QN900D, which creates a strikingly crisp image. When looking at the screen from even inches away, it was difficult to distinguish individual pixels.

Color contrast

The 8K YouTube videos we used for testing purposes showed good contrast and appropriate saturation. The darks were incredibly dark, and the colors popped next to each other. The blues of the ocean and the sky on the screen were super rich.

Viewing angle

The QN900D was fantastic from virtually every angle, with no picture degradation. We stood directly parallel to it and roughly 10 feet away and could see all of the content brightly and clearly. If you have a wide TV viewing area, consider this TV as a top option.

Gaming performance

We tested the QN900D’s gaming feature using a PS5, maxing out every setting possible. We turned the graphics and the frame rate up to the highest setting, and it was still stunning. The QN900D easily could have handled more, making it a great option for future-proofing for the next generation of consoles.

What we don’t like

Sound quality

Despite using Dolby Atmos technology, the eight built-in mini speakers had a weak bass and, overall, were just OK. Consider buying a sound bar for the QN900D.

Upscaling

While the QN900D boasts AI-driven upscaling technology to improve the quality of low-resolution content, we found tech worked best when upscaling 4K content to 8K and 1080p content to 4K. When we tested it on low-resolution video, we didn't see as big of a quality jump as with the higher-resolution content we tested.

Gaming features

Samsung QN900D gaming features
The QN900D is a gaming powerhouse, with 4K resolution at 240 Hz and many convenience features.

The QN900D has several features that are a dream for gamers. When using a compatible console or gaming PC, the QN900D supports 4K gaming at 240 hertz with a variable refresh rate (VRR). This is the first TV to support this kind of refresh rate. When using a PS5, we found the QN900D to have an incredibly smooth field of vision. It also has several modes for gaming, making it ideal for gamers looking to dial in their setup.

The QN900D also boasts a couple of unique convenience features, including a Minimap Zoom mode. In this mode, the TV automatically detects where your minimap is on your heads-up display (HUD) and zooms into it, giving you a clearer look at the map. The QN900D also supports a built-in cloud gaming module called the Samsung Gaming Hub. It includes Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation, Steam and Origin games with active subscriptions. This is great for those who want to have a clean setup and don't want a gaming console to be seen or for those who simply want an all-in-one gaming device.

Viewing angle

Samsung QN900D
The QN900D’s image quality remained crisp and clear at every angle.

When buying a TV, it’s necessary to consider the viewing angle of your TV room. If you have a wide viewing area in your home, it’s important to choose a TV that doesn’t degrade the picture while viewing from an angle. Luckily, the QN900D is a fantastic option for those with wide viewing areas. This is a big benefit of buying premium TVs and, in our testing, the QN900D image quality never degraded when viewed from various angles, including from both sides of the TV and at 45 degrees, 90 degrees and 135 degrees. With each angle, the picture was as stunning as ever.

8K clarity

Samsung QN900D 8K
The QN900D uses AI technology to create an 8K picture and upscale older content.

While native 8K content is rare and in its infancy, buying the QN900D ensures your home theater is ready for the next generation of high-resolution compatibility. We were seriously impressed with the clarity of this TV.

When testing it with 8K video, the brightness was fantastic. Whites are crisp, blacks are very inky. As we watched visuals of mountains at dusk, the shadows on the mountains were dynamic. You could even see slight variations in the mountainside; it was lifelike and breathtaking. The images were so sharp, with very clear distinctions between objects. This is likely due to Samsung’s Real Depth Enhancer Pro technology, which can detect the parts of a scene that viewers naturally focus on, bringing them to the foreground.

In short, the QN900D looks and feels premium. It’s truly top-of-the-line.

Build and design quality

Samsung QN900D build and design
The QN900D also includes a redesigned version of Samsung’s proprietary One Connect Box.

The QN900D features an innovative construction that Samsung calls Infinity Air design. The idea is to create an edge-to-edge display, providing a full picture with minimal bezel. The Infinity Air stand included with the QN900D creates a mirror effect that makes it seem like the TV is magically floating in the air.

While testing, we were very impressed with the QN900D’s build. The TV appeared thin but still felt sturdy, with virtually no bezel. The screen is about a centimeter thick with what looks like vents on the sides and top and practically no bulging from the back. In dim light only, the QN900D’s mirror effect does really make it look as though the display is floating in midair, a feature that’s sure to impress your guests.

The QN900D also includes a redesigned version of Samsung’s proprietary One Connect Box. The One Connect Box has a compact U-shaped module with two ports in the back, completely invisible to viewers, meaning you can connect all your streaming devices, video game consoles and cables while hiding unsightly wires. We found the OneConnect Box to be an excellent convenience feature.

8K Quantum Matrix Technology Pro

Samsung QN900D
The QN900D uses Quantum Matrix Technology Pro 8K backlighting to create a crisp picture.

The main reason the QN900D’s picture looks so fantastic is Samsung’s patented 8K Quantum Matrix Technology Pro. This innovative 8K backlighting technology sets the standard for Samsung picture quality. It uses Quantum Mini LEDs to deliver inky blacks, fantastic contrast and first-rate performance in both bright and dark scenes. We found the pixels to have incredible clarity, even when viewing it from up close, vividly bringing the images onscreen to life.

How does it compare to other OLED TVs we’ve tested?

The QN900D is one of the best TVs we’ve ever tested and performs above OLED TVs such as the Samsung S95C. This is a top-tier option.

Testing the QN900D

Testing the Samsung QN900D
The testing team evaluated the QN900D on various aspects, including its gaming performance.

While testing the Samsung QN900D, we viewed the TV from several angles to get a sense of picture quality, including brightness, color accuracy, viewing angle, anti-glare and sharpness. We also tested out the TV in various formats to get an idea of the user interface. To evaluate its gaming performance, we used a PS5 at max settings to see how it handled next-gen graphics, input lag and VRR. We tested games in various game modes that the QN900D offers.
