Youth basketballs are smaller than regulation size balls for men or women. For children ages 9 and younger who are learning the game, these small basketballs help them hone their skills. Kids can handle and shoot the smaller ball more successfully than a larger ball. A typical youth basketball will have a circumference of 27.5”. This is smaller than a standard ball (29.5”) and a women’s ball (28.5”). Youth basketballs are often called size 5 basketballs. You can find youth basketballs in 3 different materials. Cheaper youth basketballs will consist of rubber, and they’re suitable for outdoor play on concrete. Higher-quality youth basketballs consist of synthetic materials or leather. When playing in indoor leagues, either of these types of balls would be proper.
