A newer Christmas tradition, the Elf on the Shelf, helps reinforce the magic of Christmas and the legend of Santa Claus. Each magical Scout Elf helps keep Santa’s “naughty” and “nice” lists up to date by reporting to Santa each night about the goings-on in his assigned house in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Parents move the Elf to the shelf, the family room, the top of the refrigerator and other creative hiding spots, for children to find in a new place each morning. Some kits come with story books or DVDs explaining the legend. Others may include the elf’s pet reindeer. There’s even a book for parents who need a little help coming up with fun hiding spots for their Scout Elf.
