At some point, your toddler will want to be in charge of the feeding process. Even if he's not very coordinated and he frequently misses the target, that's okay, because at this age, it's the effort that counts. Your child's first spoon needs to have a soft, flexible tip so he doesn't injure himself. It also needs to be small, so he's not putting too much food in his mouth at one time. Ideally, the handle will be long enough so whoever is watching him will be able to jump in and help if he gets too frustrated. Lastly, a spoon that alerts you to hotter temperatures via changing colors can definitely come in handy. Tip: Brightly colored spoons can make eating fun.
