11 elegant fall wreaths

Autumn is a transitional season. It gives people the opportunity to slow down after a busy summer, anticipate the upcoming holidays and, of course, decorate. Hanging a wreath is one of the easiest and most effective ways you can welcome the fall.

Whether you decide to hang it on your front door or above the fireplace, an elegantly-designed wreath of seasonal flowers can entirely change the vibe of your home.

What to consider while shopping for a fall wreath

Size

Wreaths come in various sizes, but most are between 18 to 24 inches in diameter. While you may be tempted to select the largest wreath available, consider if it will become an obstacle. For example, an especially thick wreath could make it challenging to shut an additional screen door, which would require you to compress the wreath to latch the door securely. Conversely, a wreath that is too small will make your exterior display look unfinished.

Traditional vs. unique

Classic items like pumpkins and maple leaves are in ample supply when it comes to fall wreaths. However, there are other options available that push the boundaries of what people expect to see in an autumn display. From sunflowers to blueberries and ferns, thinking outside of the box can make your decor stand out.

If you’re feeling creative, you can also purchase a traditional wreath to use as a foundation for customization.  By adding flair to an otherwise typical wreath, you can create an original design you won’t find in stores.

Lighting

Some wreaths include lights that give them a more dynamic look. When it comes to interior use, lighted wreaths are great for people who enjoy the lights from a Christmas tree but don’t want to jump the gun on their holiday decorating. Outside lighting makes your wreath visible from the street or sidewalk.

When it comes to power, select an option that runs off of batteries. A power cord can be a tripping hazard and is hard to hide tastefully.

Location

If you opt to hang your wreath indoors, make sure you have enough wall space to accommodate it. Keep the wreath safely away from any candles or space heaters, and check that it's out of the reach of any curious pets. They may relish the opportunity to shred artificial leaves or swallow potentially dangerous foam vegetables and berries.

Most wreaths don’t include hardware, so whether you intend to mount it on a wall or place it on your front door, you will likely need to invest in the proper hooks and hangers.
