With each new month comes the promise of new releases and old favorites to all the popular streaming services. On Disney+ and its sister service Hulu, July offers a wide range of upcoming series and films that will excite viewers.
There’s drama, terror, laughs, and plenty of content to cater to every interest. The month kicks off with one of the most anticipated stories to hit the screen, and there’s much more coming after that.
Here’s what you can look forward to on Disney+ and Hulu this July.
Just in time for Independence Day comes one of the most popular and inspiring musicals of recent memory. Recorded on Broadway with the original cast, including creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, “Hamilton” is a whirlwind of a show — a funny, stirring, heartbreaking story of the founding of and fight for America.
It’s a timely tale that gives the microphone to those who aren’t often given the chance. For any who missed the regularly sold-out show in New York and as it traveled the world, now’s your chance to experience the talked-about and revelatory musical.
Disney continues to reclaim some of its original productions that were lent to other streaming services prior to the arrival of their own, and in July they welcome back “Solo: A Star Wars Story.” For better, and sometimes worse, “Solo” is the perfect encapsulation of “Star Wars” films, showcasing a diverse cast of characters (human and otherwise), some incredible set pieces, and a struggle by those in power to push the envelope while also appeasing longtime fans.
Stellar performances by Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson, Donald Glover, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (as a droid) — as well as a surprise appearance at the end — make this a fun, world-building story set before the rise of the Empire.
This original Disney+ series is a father-son road trip story, as journalist Bob Woodruff and his son take to traveling around the world to lesser-known locales. Venturing to parts (mostly) unknown, this story hopes to show that we shouldn’t be fearful of uncertainty and that a curious and open mind is what’s needed to explore the literal and figurative world around us.
This National Geographic production offers some stunning visuals, and the father-son dynamic will surely provide some laughs and maybe a few tears. All six episodes will be available at once.
It took almost 15 years, but a sequel to the beloved and entertaining animated superhero film “The Incredibles” was finally released, and now it’s making its way to Disney+. This second film finds the Parr family — each of whom possesses a unique superpower — disliked and distrusted by the society they’ve tried to help and protect. As with the best Disney films, though, “Incredibles 2” offers some subtle twists on conventional, familiar tropes, sending the matriarch of the family out on an adventure while the husband takes to parenting at home. Funny, charming, and progressive, “Incredibles 2” is a family film worth revisiting.
The muppets are back! The cast of beloved characters returns to Disney+ with a six-episode series featuring a variety of sketches and skits and quite a few celebrity guests. While the recent films told lengthy, globe-trotting stories, the series will embrace the small-screen format with a variety of short segments meant to be improvised. In all, it’ll be about three hours of content, with one episode dropping every Friday starting on July 31. It seems as good a time as any for some shambolic, chaotic fun.
While there is one more film coming to make this collection in fact a quadrilogy, you can visit — or revisit — the first three installments of “The Trip” as they bow all together on Hulu. From Michael Winterbottom, each film follows Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon playing versions of themselves as they take to England, Italy, and Spain for culinary and cultural exploration.
It’s packed with impressions, impersonations, movie quotes, and other pop culture references as the two talk age, women, and professional success — mocking each other along the way. If you're not able to get away now, let these two be your guides on a European vacation.
Four hysterically funny and rewatchable films come to Hulu, all of which are directed by Christopher Guest and star the late Fred Williard, among many other talented, charming actors like Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara. The mockumentaries “Waiting for Guffman,” “Best in Show,” “A Mighty Wind,” and “For Your Consideration” sweetly and goofily send up local thespians, dog owners, folk musicians, and film actors with Guest’s signature style and wit. It’s mostly the same cast throughout, and they’re all riotous films.
This timely documentary was released in 2016 and worth a first or second watch now as it explores systemic racism in America through the correspondences and recollections of the late writer and activist James Baldwin. Narrated by Samuel L. Jackson, this Academy Award-nominated film is captivating, stirring, and indeed sobering as it exposes racial tensions and inequalities during the Civil Rights Era. The film uses words written by Baldwin as part of an unfinished story, which is fitting as the fight for equality continues today.
Lauded on the film festival circuit early this year, the much-anticipated comedy “Palm Springs” makes its way to our homes as a Hulu Original for what may be repeated viewings. It stars Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti as a pair of wedding guests in Southern California who stumble onto something paranormal and get stuck in a time loop, as one does.
They relive the wedding day over again, as the movie oscillates among the silly, strange, absurd, and terrifying. Based on early reviews and the talent of the cast and crew — as well as a recent trailer — this is one you don’t want to miss.
The Hulu horror anthology series continues in July with another episode set around Independence Day. It tells the story of a man without memory stuck in a psychiatric institution who believes he is in fact the President of the United States of America. The episode just finished filming prior to the entertainment shut down, and editing was done remotely to bring us a decidedly less fun and festive vision of the Fourth of July.
An FX on Hulu production, “A Teacher” stars Kate Mara as an educator who develops an illicit relationship with a student. Based on the indie film of 2013 of the same name, it explores the tension, chaos, and fallout of the affair between a female Texas teacher and her male student. Hannah Fidell, who wrote and directed the movie, is involved with this production as well; the 10-episode miniseries will air weekly.
