What do you need to set a table?

There's an art to table-setting and some people don't know where to start. Not only do you need your essentials, but some decorative touches to tie the whole lot together. Here are some of the pieces you might need to set a table.

  • Linens: While a tablecloth or table runner isn't essential (and some people find them overly formal), you might want one for a special occasion. Floral prints are great for spring meals. Cloth napkins can also elevate a table setting.
  • Plates and bowls: Setting your table with any plates and bowls needed for the meal is a good idea when serving meals family-style. Again, floral prints are lovely for a spring-themed table.
  • Glassware: The type of glassware you'll need depends on the drinks you'll be serving, whether wine, beer, spirits, soft drinks, or just water.
  • Cutlery: You'll need to lay your table with the cutlery you'll need for the meal. You may just need one knife and fork per person, or you may need additional utensils, such as salad forks or soup spoons.
  • Candles or centerpieces: While it's not essential to add decorative items to your table, it's certainly a nice touch. Candles are always a winner, but there are other things you can use as centerpieces. Floral arrangements are particularly fitting for spring. Several small arrangements in bud vases (instead of one big arrangement) give you a better sight-line across the table for easier conversation.
  • Placemats: Not everyone opts for placemats, but they can protect your table or keep your tablecloth clean. And, there are some pretty spring options out there.
  • Extras: You can find some other table-setting extras that you might want, depending on the meal and circumstances. For instance, some people like using utensil caddies for informal meals. Or, you might need extra serving platters or bowls for dips or sauces.

Best Walmart spring table-setting essentials

The Pioneer Woman Pretty Posies 12-Piece Stoneware Dinnerware Set

This 12-piece set includes four dinner plates, four side plates and four bowls. Each has a dainty floral pattern that's gorgeous for spring. They're dishwasher-safe, so cleaning up after your meal is easy too.

Better Homes & Gardens Unscented Pillar Candles

The ridged design of these pillar candles sets them apart from standard straight versions. They're unscented, which is better for mealtimes than scented ones. You get three in a pack, each of a different color. The yellow, pink and red options are particularly spring-like.

The Pioneer Woman Amelia Glass Goblets

What's great about these goblets is their versatility. They're great for wine, beer, water, juice, iced tea, cocktails or wherever else you want to serve in them. The delicate design and colored glass — you have a choice of pink, blue or tea — make them a lovely springtime pick.

Beautiful by Drew Barrymore 8-Piece Table Linen Set

This linen set is among our favorite Walmart spring table-setting essentials. It includes a table runner, six napkins and a jute basket to store them all in. We love the bold floral print with its black background. It has a vintage appeal, but still feels more contemporary than some florals.

My Texas House Emma Woven Textured Placemat

Made from white fabric with a textured decorative design and tassels at each end, this placemat won't look out of place on a spring table. It measures 14 inches by 20 inches, so it's good for large tables or for setting in the center of tables to hold hot serving dishes.

Graze by Cambridge Mathison Champagne Sand & Mirror Flatware Set

If you're bored with basic flatware, this champagne-colored set brings some flair to your table. It's a 20-piece set containing salad forks, dinner forks, dinner knives, dinner spoons and teaspoons for four.

The Pioneer Woman Adeline Glass Pitcher

You can use this lively, spring-like pitcher for serving lemonade, iced tea, cocktails, or even just water. It has a vintage-style pattern embossed in the glass and comes in a gorgeous shade of turquoise.  It holds just over 1.5 quarts.

Better Homes & Gardens Large Rectangle Galvanized Tub

If you like a casual, rustic touch to your table settings, this galvanized tub is a perfect accessory for holding drinks on ice. It's an especially great choice for a spring cookout or other alfresco meal.

Better Homes & Gardens Ceramic Chip Dip Bowl with Acacia Tray

This bowl set is designed for chips and dips, although you could use it to hold other foods. It consists of two white ceramic bowls on a pretty acacia wood tray. It looks good enough for formal dinners, but isn't too fancy for casual meals either.

Better Homes & Gardens Beige Oval Rattan Caddy

Utensil caddies are great for informal meals where you don't necessarily want to set every place and instead want to let people help themselves to flatware. This rattan caddy is not only practical, it looks great too.
