It has less suction power than an upright vacuum cleaner but is smaller and more portable. It has a rotating nozzle, comes with a crevice tool and recharges through a wall socket. The translucent dirt receptacle can store about 1.3 pounds of dust and debris.

How to use the Black + Decker Dustbuster AdvancedClean

The testing team found that unboxing the vacuum cleaner is relatively simple. It comes in three separate pieces that clip together and, after a four-hour charge, should be ready to go to work.

It's light enough to hold securely with one hand while vacuuming up dirt, and the brush tool neatly clips onto the end of the nozzle for quick attaching. The bagless container is emptied by twisting off the larger nozzle section.

The testing lab thought the setup process was as basic as it could be. You attach the suction attachment to the base, which feels intuitive, and then place it on the charging dock. This has a slightly awkward design, but it sits in there tightly enough.

In terms of suction power, it performs well. It has a large debris chamber at its base, which sits like a bulb. It’s very simple to use, especially with no attachments, and its suction is very powerful. 

The bundle version with the freestanding charging base makes it easy to ensure it's always ready to work. The base is small enough to be left out of the way on a counter, and the vacuum charges in about four hours.

A bonus when you have lots of furniture or tight spaces in your home is the extendible nozzle to reach tight spaces. At the end of the nozzle is a brush tool that folds away once attached, which is handy to use on furniture for removing pet hair.

Black + Decker Dustbuster AdvancedClean drawbacks

The manufacturing can sometimes feel a little cheap, and the design, while accommodating lots of debris storage, is a little awkward. Also, the motor of the handheld vacuum is incredibly loud for its size. However, since it's indicative of the suction power, it isn’t that bad of a trade-off.

The testing team had some difficulties in emptying the debris container. You just open the container and dump it out, but it can get stuck at the bottom, and you sometimes have to dig it out.

Compared to Shark handheld vacuums, the Dustbuster AdvancedClean seems more powerful and has a better suction setup, but it’s also louder, clunkier and generally uglier. However, both are lightweight and very intuitive to use.

While the freestanding charging base is a smart accessory, the testing lab didn’t appreciate the design. It seemed flimsy, and you must make sure that the vacuum is seated correctly before walking away to confirm that it’s actually charging.

The Black + Decker Dustbuster AdvancedClean is a tool that delivers on what it promises to do. The design of some elements is a bit awkward, but the powerful suction makes up for any other shortcomings. If you're looking for a compact handheld vacuum cleaner that you can also use in your vehicle, this is a solid option.

It’s best suited for small homes to clean up light dirt accumulation, loose debris and to manage pet hair on furniture. It certainly isn’t a replacement or alternative for a proper vacuum cleaner, but it functions well for occasional household chores.
