What is the Dell U2720QM?

The Dell U2720QM is a 27-inch LED monitor for desktop computers and laptops. It has a maximum resolution of 4K (3840 x 2160 pixels) and a refresh rate of 60 hertz, giving you crisp and clear images. For connectivity, it has USB, DisplayPort and HDMI ports and is specifically designed for gaming. It has a 178-degree viewing angle and 350 Nit brightness levels.

Dell U2720QM price and where to buy

The Dell U2720QM is available on Amazon for $554.99. It comes with an HDMI cable; however, you’ll need to buy an additional DisplayPort cable if that’s your connection of choice. There are no accessories available.

How to use Dell U2720QM

The 27-inch monitor is relatively easy to set up. The testing team found that all the components were neatly packaged, and the instructions were clear. It comprises three parts: the stand base, the riser and the monitor, all of which clip together. 

Once assembled, you can use the HDMI or the DisplayPort cable (depending on your computer’s output port) and enable the monitor through your computer’s operating system. The monitor’s function buttons and the power switch are underneath the front bezel, while the other connectivity ports, audio connection and stand lock are at the back.

The most significant feature of this monitor is the generous 27-inch real estate at a 4K resolution. This provides you with amazing visual quality for games and streaming videos that support it. The 60-hertz refresh rate isn’t as fast as other gaming monitors, but thankfully, only a few video games support a faster refresh rate.  

The LED technology in the display panel also contributes to the crisp visuals. Unlike its plasma predecessor, LED has a wider and brighter color range and contrast ratio. Coupled with Dell’s DisplayHDR 400 software, it gives you near-lifelike shades and hues.

Seeing everything clearly at eye level is important, so the monitor lets you adjust the display to your preferred height. In its compressed state, it measures 15.5 inches tall, and it can go to 20.6 inches when fully extended. This gives you more than 5 inches of adjustability, and it can tilt, swivel and pivot.

The monitor has two USB ports on the left side, which the team found useful. It’s easy to connect something such as a USB ring light or charge your mobile device, and it frees up a port from your laptop. 

Dell U2720QM drawbacks

While the image quality is more than enough for most gaming and video streaming scenarios, it doesn’t have built-in speakers. However, there is a 3.5-millimeter audio jack for you to connect wired headphones or run it through an additional audio source.

In most cases, you’ll connect headphones directly to your computer or laptop, as both the HDMI and DisplayPort are capable of carrying an audio signal.

The USB ports on the side of the monitor are convenient, but the testing team found it difficult to reach the USB-C port on the back panel. For ease of use, it would have been much better if the USB-C, which is now widely used, was also accessible on the side. 

Should you get the Dell U2720QM?

If you're in the market for a 4K monitor with a generous 27-inch display area, the Dell U2720QM is a fantastic choice. It delivers crisp visuals no matter what's connected to it, and adjusting the colors, contrast ratio and settings is easy.

However, it doesn’t have similar features to other gaming monitors in the same price range. For example, it doesn’t have compatibility with Nvidia’s G-Synch or AMD’s FreeSync, which reduces screen tearing and artifacts. 

If you have more than one gadget to connect to the monitor, you’ll probably be frustrated that there's only one HDMI port. This can cause hassles when you need to change the input from your computer to a gaming console and struggle to swap cables.
