Just like humans, dogs are prone to various conditions that cause pain and require medications to control. Osteoarthritis is common among canines, especially those that are advanced in age. Dog pain relief and arthritis medications that control pain and reduce inflammation are available, plus they are useful in treating pain and inflammation caused by other problems such as hip dysplasia, surgical procedures, and cancer symptoms. Steroidal and non-steroid (NSAID) medications are available, but must be prescribed by a veterinarian. As with most drugs, side effects are possible but are often manageable and outweighed by the pain control provided by the medications. Keep in mind that it is not safe to give dog pain medications to cats.
