If you love trendy home décor, you've probably heard of midcentury modern, a furniture style that's been around since the 1920s, but has recently come back into style. Authentic midcentury pieces come with hefty price tags, but if you love the look, you can get tons of less-expensive furniture made to mimic midcentury design from Wayfair — and the site has some great deals.

What is midcentury modern design?

Midcentury modern design emerged in the mid-1920s but really took off after World War II.

"Designers and architects were eager to develop new ideas that married the mass production and technology invented during the first half of the 20th century with a more optimistic outlook for the future," designer Liza Kuhn explained to The Spruce

Because mass production was a big part of the style, midcentury design is all about clean lines and functionality. This is furniture that emphasizes function and practicality over ornate frills.

Midcentury furniture typically employs clean, geometric lines and materials like teak, rosewood and oak. Bright pops of color are also common, which give it a retro feel typical of the 1950s, when it was most popular. Think reds, sages and yellows. It's also very common for pieces to use mixed materials, like a wood frame with upholstery or metal, glass or vinyl.
