Here’s what to do ahead of a big winter storm, and what to stock up on

A major winter storm is coming across the U.S., with forecasts from the southwest to the northeast warning about freezing temperatures, heavy snow, ice and possible power outages. With a storm like this, preparing in advance can be the difference between a dangerous situation and riding it out in (relative) comfort. A little planning now can save a lot of stress later — especially if roads get bad or the power goes out.

Storm prep is about more than just groceries — it's the boring-but-important things like charging phones and backup batteries, refilling prescriptions, checking smoke detector and flashlight batteries, and making sure your car has gas, wiper fluid and an ice scraper. Experts say to have a well-stocked emergency kit in your car and at least two days of supplies on hand at home. In addition, don't:

• Drive on icy roads unless you have to
• Use a gas stove or grill for heat
• Use your car for heat if it's parked in an enclosed space (like the garage)
• Leave your garage door open (your home stays warmer when it's closed)
• Use hot water to melt frozen windows (it may cause them to shatter)
