Hatch’s new alarm clock tracks your sleep from your bedside table

Hatch

Hatch’s newest alarm clock is a contactless sleep tracker

Hatch has built a reputation around making mornings a little easier thanks to its viral sunrise alarm clock. But its newest gadget helps you pay attention to what happens before the alarm goes off. The Hatch Sleep Clock combines the familiar gradual light, sleep sounds and bedtime routines of a Hatch alarm clock with contactless sleep tracking — which means nothing goes under your mattress or onto your wrist. The clock can gather all its sleep tracking data while sitting on your nightstand.

The tracking works by detecting tiny movements and breathing patterns while you sleep, then estimating when you slept and your sleep stages and showing you patterns and personalized recommendations in the Hatch app. Hatch claims it's 97% accurate compared with traditional sleep trackers, though it offers fewer features (for example, it doesn't track your heart rate, blood oxygen or temperature).

The Hatch Sleep Clock is still a full-fledged sunrise alarm and sound machine too. It can gradually brighten your room in the morning, use light and audio for wind-down routines at night and function as a bedside smart light. There's also an optional Hatch+ membership that expands its audio library to more than 2,500 sounds, stories and meditations.

The popular Hatch Restore 3 is the main clock to compare it with — and the one that helped establish Hatch as a major name in sunrise alarms. Restore 3 offers circadian lighting, a white noise machine with more than 80 sleep sounds, and customizable bedtime and morning routines. After you set it up the first time, many controls live right on the clock, making it largely screen-free. Plus, it comes with a 30-day Hatch+ trial.

Side-by-side, the clocks have quite a bit in common. Tom’s Guide found the Sleep Clock and Restore 3 look nearly identical, and their sunrise, sunset, light and audio performance are essentially the same. The main difference between them is that only the Sleep Clock includes the sleep tracker. Restore 3 retails for $169.99, while the Sleep Clock is $249.99, so that extra $80 is largely paying for wearable-free sleep data and recommendations.
