They give parents a way to locate an item traveling with their child without giving them a phone or smartwatch. The appeal is easy to understand as phone restrictions spread through schools. An AirTag can stay attached to a shoe, backpack or lunchbox without giving the student access to texts, social media or the internet — in other words, it doesn't break rules about having a phone or smartwatch in class.

That said, Apple advises that AirTags are made to track objects, not people or pets, and warns against tracking anyone without consent. While this can help parents address some back-to-school season anxiety, it's not a replacement for an emergency plan (or communicating with your kids).
