Prime Day 2021: How to find the best deals on the summer’s biggest shopping day

Amazon Prime Day returns this summer

Amazon looks to reset the shopping calendar this year and bring back its popular summer shopping event, Prime Day. Last year, the two-day sales spree took place on Oct. 12-13, but reports are that Amazon is pushing its annual occasion back to its rightful spot in July, if not sooner.

While we don’t know the exact dates yet, as close followers of Prime Day, we know how important it is to plan ahead for great deals. Navigating all the sales can be overwhelming. With the chance to score some terrific discounts, you don’t want to come in unprepared. Our guide has all you need to know to get ready for a successful Prime Day 2021.

When is Prime Day 2021?

Since 2015, Prime Day has fallen in mid-July, and it seems like Amazon is eager to place it back in its summer setting after a year of displacement. A leaked memo circulating online suggests that the two-day event will occur July 12-13.

However, conflicting reports suggest the event might be bumped up into June, either right before or right after the calendar officially turns to summer. The two-day event typically starts on a Monday, which means we could also be looking at June 14, June 21 or June 28 for the event to kick off.

What is Prime Day?

Amazon Prime Day is a two-day sales event for Amazon Prime members, with discounts across various products big and small through all of the site’s many categories and departments. The first Prime Day was held in 2015 to honor the website’s 20th birthday.

Over the last few years, the event expanded from one to two days, with some sales coming at the start of the event, with others coming online across the 48 hours.

How to ensure you can participate in Prime Day

Only Amazon Prime members can enjoy full access to all the sales across the site. There are two ways users can sign up: either monthly for $12.99/month or an annual subscription that runs $119/year.

However, 30-day trials exist and are likely to be offered to many shoppers and potential consumers. These will give you all the Prime benefits across a month and allow you to indulge in Prime Day. Note that while there are likely to be sales offered to everyone on the site, only Prime members will have access to the best deals.

Is Prime Day worth it?

Amazon Prime members enjoy free two-day shipping and access to a wide range of sales and discounts across the two days.

Prime Day stands out for offering worthy discounts on notable investments, particularly electronics, home office supplies and kitchen appliances. For items that cost hundreds of dollars, the discounts add up substantially. Typically, if there is an item you’ve been putting off purchasing because you’re waiting for a sale, you’ll find it on Prime Day.

Tips to simplify Prime Day

Create a list

Deals range across every department, and while there is something for everyone, it means there will be a lot of stuff that you won’t be interested in. Draft a list of both needed and desired items ahead of time to narrow the search.

Set a budget

For products that you may need to buy and those you want to buy, create a budget to work within. You can set limits on specific products as well as an overall budget for the whole event. Be sure to leave some extra for products you didn’t know you wanted.

Check in periodically

Prime Day deals pop in for a limited time and then disappear - these are lightning deals. Others may run out of stock quickly. Set notifications or timers for you to look into the site for current offers. The ‘watch’ button on a product listing will let you know when a deal is live.

Get help from Amazon

Both Alexa and the Amazon Assistant apps can help identify and organize deals in a more meaningful and coherent way. Employ them to help focus your shopping.

Don’t hesitate

If there is something you know you want and need, you likely won’t have much time to consider. Products may run out of stock quickly, leaving you in a position to pay more money.

What should you buy on Prime Day to save the most money?

We expect plenty of Amazon products to go on sale, from popular electronic items like e-readers and tablets to a range of items under the AmazonBasics brand. Amazon may also refurbish electronics that they promote well.

Amazon also knows what people have been enjoying throughout the year and what they’re looking forward to. That’s why you’re sure to find a range of home entertainment deals, including smart TVs, gaming monitors, speakers and soundbars. Similarly, look for home office equipment, such as printers, ergonomic keyboards and power banks, to be on sale as well.

We’re also anticipating a push on travel and outdoor equipment this Prime Day as more people seek to travel this summer and fall. Look for luggage, camping supplies, backpacks and other items that may make adventures more enjoyable and comfortable to be heavily discounted.

15 best deals for Prime Day 2021

While we’re not sure the exact products that will go on sale this Prime Day, we have history and insight to guide the way, helping us anticipate what will be offered to Prime members. Here are some of the top products we’re expecting to make for great deals on Prime Day.

The Echo is among Amazon's more popular electronic devices for streaming music and podcasts. With Alexa integrated, it can also set alarms, report the news, track appointments and act as your hub for news and entertainment.

Prime Day is sure to provide discounts on popular countertop appliances, like the air fryer that offers an oil-free means of convenient cooking. This favorite model by Ninja also dehydrates, reheats and roasts.

Acer Chromebook

We’re anticipating a range of laptops on sale Prime Day, including already budget-friendly Chromebooks, which are designed to integrate easily with Google platforms. We’re hoping to get a deal on Acer’s versatile and convenient Spin model.

This hot item is likely to be highlighted again on Prime Day, as this water bottle offers exceptional filtration and incredible durability for when you need to stay hydrated taking to the outdoors.

PS Now Membership

We don’t expect any surprises in the availability of the new gaming consoles from Sony and Microsoft, but that doesn’t mean gamers will be left out on Prime Day. Look for a discounted subscription to PlayStation’s membership program that offers at least two free games a month to players.
