10 handy electric toothbrushes you can buy on Amazon right now

Keeping on top of your oral hygiene helps prevent serious dental issues down the line such as cavities and gum disease. It's worth investing in an electric toothbrush, as they remove plaque more effectively than manual brushes.

However, it can be tough to figure out which of the many on offer are worth buying. These 11 great options are available on Amazon right now.

In this article: Philips Sonicare ExpertClean 7500, Oral-B iO Series 9 Electric Toothbrush and AquaSonic Black Series+.

Types of electric toothbrushes

You'll find two main types of electric toothbrush: oscillating toothbrushes and sonic toothbrushes. Both are more effective than manuals, but you may find one or the other better suits your needs.

  • Oscillating: The small round heads of these toothbrushes rapidly oscillate to clean the surfaces of the teeth. The compact heads work their way into spots that larger heads can't reach, which is why some dentists recommend them over sonic toothbrushes. However, if you have sensitive gums, you may find them a little harsh.
  • Sonic: Sonic toothbrushes use ultrasonic pulses that vibrate the toothbrush head to loosen and remove plaque. The pulses also force liquid between your teeth to clean the surfaces no brush can touch. Sonicare toothbrushes are the most well-known, but there are brands other than Philips that make sonic models. The cheapest aren't that much more effective than manual brushing, but the best can be expensive.

Electric toothbrush brush heads

Toothbrushes usually come with standard multipurpose heads, but you can sometimes buy other types of heads separately that work well for particular tasks or situations. For instance, some are designed to give you a deeper-than-average clean or clean between the teeth. Others are great for sensitive gums or have whitening capabilities. Think about what you want from your toothbrush and choose a head accordingly.

What to look for in an electric toothbrush

It's good to know more about some of the common features or what to look out for before you buy an electric toothbrush.

  • Battery life: Some toothbrushes last for as long as a month when used twice a day, while others need charging once every week or two. Battery life is more important when you travel than when you're home, unless you're prepared to pack the charger.
  • App compatibility: If you're looking for a high-tech toothbrush, consider buying one that's app-compatible. These brushes link to your phone via Bluetooth to track information about how you brush and give you tips to improve.
  • Quadrant timer: It's recommended that you brush for two minutes at a time, spending equal time brushing each quadrant of your teeth. Most brushes pulse or beep every 30 seconds so you know when to move on to the next quadrant.
  • Brushing modes: While basic brushes have just one mode, more advanced models can have several. Popular modes include everyday clean, deep clean, whitening, sensitive and gum health.
  • Pressure sensor: The pressure sensor tells when you're brushing your teeth too hard, which could injure your gums. When you press down excessively, a red light on the body of the brush lights up.
