8 fun Christmas wreath ideas

Hung from the front door, displayed over a fireplace or placed on the table as a centerpiece for a meal shared with friends and family, wreaths are the most iconic Christmas decoration this side of Santa hats and the tree.

Whether you're a pine-bough traditionalist hoping to recapture the nostalgia of years past or an adventurous soul looking to add flashy colors and unique flair to your home, Christmas wreaths let you express your holiday spirit however you choose.

In this article: Vanthylit Lighted Metal Christmas Wreath, Hallmark Keepsake Star Galaxy Black Wreath with Lights and Natural Pinecone Wreath.

Style

More than any other holiday, Christmas lends itself to personalization in decoration. Whether you like to keep things tasteful and subtle or go all out with inflatable characters, music and quirky crafts, there is a wreath for you.

Consider the kind of mood you want to create and choose a wreath that will fit with the rest of your accessories. Don’t be afraid to experiment. A house decorated primarily with white lights, for example, might be complemented nicely with a wreath on the front door adorned with lights of a different color.

Materials

  • Artificial pine wreaths are the most common, offering a classic Christmas look. They come in a multitude of colors and sizes and can be decorated with ornaments to further customize their appearance.

  • Ornament wreaths are made out of bulb ornaments and add a dash of shimmering color to your decor.

  • Wood or pine-cone wreaths give your display a rustic farmhouse look.

  • Metal wreaths are great for those who prefer a more subdued, minimal approach to decorating.

Lights and power

Many wreaths come pre-lit, so you don’t have to purchase lights separately. If your wreath runs on battery power, you won't create a tripping hazard or need to search for an electrical outlet. Most battery-powered wreaths can’t be set up with a timer, however, so if you want to turn it off before bed with the rest of your display you’ll have to step outside in the chill.

Inside or outdoors

If you're going to place your wreath outside, purchase one that can withstand the elements. Hang it securely to keep it from being knocked down or blown away by the wind. With wreaths that need to be plugged in, keep the power cord away from areas people will walk though and only use extension cables that are safe for the outdoors.

If you require a ladder to install your wreath, enlist a friend or family member to help. Be careful of any icy surfaces you can slip on.

If your wreath will be used inside, place it far from candles or other sources of open flame. Keep indoor decorations out of the reach of pets and small children. Foam berries and ornaments can become cutting or choking hazards if pulled from the wreath.

Size

Measure the area where you plan to hang your wreath and select one that will fit. Hanging a wreath that's too wide or thick can make it challenging to open and close your door. Placing a small wreath on a large wall will make your display appear unfinished.
