8 canopy beds that add luxury and class to any bedroom

If you're looking for a statement piece of furniture for a bedroom, a canopy bed fits the brief. Adding luxury and class to a room, you can find this type of bed in both traditional and modern styles to fit in with most decor.

Your chosen bed frame shouldn't just look the part but should also be durable enough to stand up to years of use.

What is a canopy bed?

A canopy bed has long posts extending from each corner and a frame over the top of the bed. It was originally intended to have fabric covering the top of the frame and curtains around the edges. However, many people today simply drape light material over the top or down the sides or leave the upper frame bare.

Back in the medieval era, when this type of bed was invented, it was centuries before central heating. The covered design was intended to keep sleepers warm. Now, it's easy enough to keep warm at night, but a canopy bed brings an element of drama to the bedroom.

What to look for in a canopy bed

Size

You can find canopy beds in all standard sizes, from twin to king. Consider the size of the room and who will be sleeping on the bed when picking a size. A twin bed might be fine for a child, but a twin bed is more comfortable for an adult who sleeps alone. Queen and king beds are best for couples who share a bed. If you don't want to replace your mattress at the same time as you buy a bed frame, choose a bed the same size as your last one.

Materials

Bed frames are made from one of three materials: metal, solid wood or wood composite.

  • Metal: Metal bed frames are sturdy yet affordable. You'll find them in both simple and elaborate designs, so there's something to suit most bedrooms.
  • Solid wood: Wooden beds can be extremely durable when they're well-made or relatively flimsy when they're inexpensive. Some people prefer the traditional look of wooden furniture.
  • Wood composite: Wood composite beds are cheaper than high-end solid wood beds and more durable than cheap ones. They're great if you want the look of a wooden bed on a budget.

Style

You'll come across canopy frames in a range of styles, but they can be broadly grouped into two main styles: modern and traditional.

  • Modern: Modern beds have clean lines and a simple yet stylish appearance. They tend to have simple headboards and little adornment.
  • Traditional: Beds that are traditional style tend to have classic details, such as bed knobs, wrought iron detailing or elaborate paneled or upholstered headboards.
