A springform pan is a cake pan with a removable bottom and sides. This makes removing the cake from the pan easier, maintaining the shape. Most springform pans will be round in shape, but some have other shapes, such as hearts, for special occasions. The sides of the springform pan are locked in place with an interlocking buckle. This buckle switch keeps the sides in place until the baking process is finished. By flipping the switch, you then can release the pan carefully, leaving the shape perfect. Many bakers will use these pans for cheesecake, tarts, or ice cream cakes, in addition to traditional cakes.
