Christmas stockings have been hung “by the chimney with care” for centuries, with all countries that celebrate the holiday having their own spin on its legend and design. Families each have their own traditions, too. You may prefer an extra large stocking to hold all the gifts for the recipient, while others only have a few gifts from St. Nick to stuff on Christmas Eve, so choose the size accordingly. If you want to make them a lasting piece of memorabilia, choose a well made, thick stocking that won’t rip or stretch out and lose its shape. You may want to look for one that you can embroider or print a name on. Make sure there’s a well-secured tie so you can hang them without fear of dropping and breaking the contents, and for safety — and despite the poem — keep them away from open fires.
