How to choose a double stroller for a toddler and an infant

You have lots to think about when your family grows, and the logistical issue of transporting your baby and toddler at the same time is just one of them. Thankfully, there are plenty of double strollers well-suited to carrying a toddler and an infant to make your life easier.

It's important to know what to look for in a double stroller, so you don't end up with one that's more of a hindrance than a help.

Types of double strollers

Double strollers come in two main varieties: side-by-side and in-line. It's a good idea to learn more about each, but in-line options are usually best for accommodating a baby and a toddler.

  • Side-by-side: Side-by-side strollers feature two seats next to one another. While they're great for twins, it can be a challenge to seat a baby and a toddler in one, because toddlers aren't always gentle with infants. The other drawback of side-by-side double strollers is that they can be tough (or even impossible) to fit through some doors.
  • In-line: In-line strollers feature one seat in front of the other. They're also known as tandem strollers. They're the better option for a baby and a toddler, as you don't need to worry that your toddler won't keep their hands to themselves.

Double stroller seating options

Depending on the age gap between your children, your baby may need to move from an infant seat to a stroller-style seat before your toddler ages out of using a stroller. In this case, you'll need to make sure your chosen stroller can comfortably accommodate two stroller seats in a configuration that will suit both your kids.

You might also want a stroller with an integrated or detachable standing board. This is useful once your older child gets big enough to stand on the back of the stroller. It can also help you accommodate a third if your family continues to expand.

Other useful double-stroller features

These are some of the other double stroller features that you might find handy:

  • Adjustable seats: Ideally, look for seats that not only have adjustable recline but can also be configured facing either forward or backward.
  • Stadium seating: This is when the rear seat is higher than the front seat, so the child riding in the back gets a better view when facing forward.
  • Storage: With both a baby and a toddler, you're going to have to carry a lot of gear with you. A good double stroller has generous storage compartments so it isn't a challenge fitting in what you need.
  • Dual canopies: Each seat on a double stroller should have its own adjustable canopy. This lets you provide more shade for one child than the other at times when this makes sense.
  • Off-road capabilities: It's nice to have a stroller that can go anywhere so you can follow your active toddler. Strollers with suspension and large, air-filled tires are usually better at going off the beaten track.
